Charlita is a language learning app operated by Martin Valovic. For anything about your data, write to hola@charlita.app.
Your email address, used only to sign you in. Your learning activity: answers, review schedule, streaks, placement results, saved words and the notes the tutor keeps about your mistakes. If you turn on notifications, a push subscription for your browser or device.
We do not run ads, we do not sell data and we do not track you across other sites.
When you practice pronunciation, your short voice clip is sent to Microsoft Azure for scoring and the score comes back. Charlita does not keep the recording. When you chat with the tutor or play a roleplay, those messages are sent to our AI provider (OpenAI) to generate the reply.
If you say yes when Charlita asks, we use PostHog to count how people use the app and to see where they get stuck. PostHog runs in the EU (Frankfurt). We see which screens you open and which buttons you tap, but not the words written on them. We also see how long things take and recordings of your screen. Recordings hide everything you type. Screens with private writing, like the tutor, your letters and your journal, are masked too. We never send your email address or anything you write. In PostHog you are a pseudonymous user. That means a random account number with a few facts attached, such as your plan, your level, your learning goals, how you found Charlita and when you signed up. It is not your name or email address but it is tied to your account. We delete it when you delete your account.
If you say no, PostHog stores nothing on your device. There are no cookies, no recordings and no tracking of taps or heatmaps. We still count page views and the main things that happen in the app, like finishing a lesson, without knowing who you are. PostHog throws away your IP address in both cases. Recordings of people who said yes are kept for 30 days.
You can change your mind any time in Settings under Help improve Charlita. Switching it off stops recording and tap tracking straight away. Our server also sends a few measurements, like how long a tutor reply took, but only for people who said yes.
Separately, Charlita keeps its own log of what happens in the app, like finishing a lesson. It lives in our database and we use it to run the app and see what works. We do this because it is in our legitimate interest and it happens whether you say yes or no. It is deleted with your account.
Crash reports go to Sentry, also on EU servers. They show us what broke so we can fix it.
Your account and learning data are stored with Supabase (database hosted in Canada). The site runs on Vercel. Crash reports go to Sentry (EU servers) so we can fix bugs. If you allow analytics, usage data goes to PostHog (EU servers in Frankfurt). Sign-in emails are sent through Resend.
In Settings you can download everything we hold about your learning as one file. You can also delete your account. Deletion is immediate and permanent: your account and all of your data are removed. You can also email hola@charlita.app for any request.
One cookie is always set: the one that keeps you signed in. The app cannot work without it. We use no advertising cookies.
If you say yes to analytics, PostHog stores cookies or local storage entries whose names start with ph_. They hold a random id and your current visit so we can follow it from start to end. If you say no, PostHog stores nothing.
Charlita also remembers your answer on your device under the key charlita-consent. It is only there to remember your choice. It tracks nothing. In the iPhone app these live in the app's own storage.
Charlita is intended for people aged 14 and over. If you are under 14, please do not create an account.
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will say so in the app before the change applies.
